Chapter Five

“I’m impressed,” Miles announced, as he leaned against the doorframe leading into Carl’s office and admired a very nice view.

Carl looked over his shoulder and stopped leaning over his desk as if presenting his arse to be screwed. Miles stepped into his office and closed the door behind him. Thankfully, Floyd was nowhere to be seen.

For the first time that day, Miles had his lover all to himself.

“You’re impressed with the proposed magazine layout?” Carl asked.

Miles moved closer, until he stood directly in front of Carl. “With the fact that you haven’t given me the cold shoulder even once today. I’ll admit I was half-expecting you to throw one hell of a strop after I insisted on leaving last night.”

Carl huffed and returned his attention to the poster mock-ups laid out across his desk. “There wouldn’t be much point in that, would there?”

Miles studied the younger man’s profile very carefully. “You tell me.” He certainly hadn’t found it easy to leave a naked and sleepy submissive behind. He tensed at the idea that Carl hadn’t struggled just as much when he’d been left alone after their scene.

Hell, even if pride were put to one side, making them sleep apart wasn’t going to help at all, unless it was annoying enough to force them to face their individual demons and make their clean start work.

Carl sighed and rubbed the back of his neck, just above the line of his T-shirt. Miles only just resisted the temptation to push his hand aside and take over the massage. There was no way in hell he’d have been able to keep it PG rated if he laid his hands on the boy.

“Talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place.” Carl muttered. “Oh?”

“I want what I want,” Carl said, very firmly, but it wasn’t easy to work out who he was trying to convince.

“That seems reasonable enough,” Miles allowed.

Carl frowned down at his desk, but Miles was willing to bet he didn’t actually see anything that was there.

“But another part of me wants to do as you say,” Carl went on. “It wants to agree with you and do whatever it takes to make you pleased with me. And that side of me doesn’t really give a damn about what I want.”

Miles forced himself to remain silent as Carl fidgeted with his paperwork, bundling it together and straightening out the corners.

“I’m sure it would feel really good to tell you that you’re a complete pillock and that leaving my flat last night was a bloody sadistic thing to do. But I also know the good feeling wouldn’t last long. On the other hand, if you’re going to be pleased with me for putting up with your bull. That might last, so…” Carl finished with a shrug.

The pure honesty in the boy’s words took Miles’ breath away. “I think you’ll find that’s called a natural inclination toward submission.”

“Damn annoying, is what I’m calling it at the moment,” Carl muttered. “I really want to be pissed off with you, but it’s just not happening right now.
